COLOMBO (News 1st); 21 Indian fishermen who were detained and arrested in the Sea of Sri Lanka early on Tuesday (1) were remanded until the 7th of February.One Indian fisherman was ordered to be moved to a quarantine facility due to COVID concerns.2 Indian trawlers with 21 Indian fishermen were held for poaching in the Sea of Sri Lanka, off Kovilan and Point Pedro Lighthouse, Jaffna on the night of 31st January 2022.The trawlers, that had illegally entered into Lankan waters, were reportedly surrounded by Sri Lankan fishing boats until the Navy arrived.

Both trawlers were then escorted to KKS.Reports say that the Fishing community did not allow Minister Douglas Devananda to intervene last night, and protested against any attempt to have the trawlers released.Sri Lanka Navy said a special operation was mounted by deploying Fast Attack Craft of the 04th Fast Attack Flotilla in the Northern Naval Command, another Fast Patrol Boat of Sri Lanka Coast Guard and with the assistance of the Navy’s Special Boat Squadron.The operation led to the apprehension of these 2 Indian trawlers with 21 Indian fishermen while poaching in Sri Lankan territorial waters on the night of 31st January.As the Indian trawlers were attempting to evade naval units with their aggressive manoeuvres, they also caused damages to the SLN Fast Attack Craft.The Navy also held several bottom trawling equipment and fish caught by this illegal fishing method from the seized fishing trawlers.The operation was conducted adhering to COVID-19 protocols due to pandemic concerns.

Meanwhile, necessary arrangements are being made to produce the apprehended Indian fishermen to relevant authorities, after directing them for Rapid Antigen Test for COVID-19. .

COLOMBO (News 1st); In a special operation carried out by Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) in coordination with Sri Lanka Police and intelligence agencies, another drug-carrying foreign vessel was intercepted in international waters south of Sri Lanka on 26th January 2022.This foreign multiday fishing trawler, remaining on high seas with a view to transferring the consignment to a local fishing vessel, had jettisoned about 200kg of heroin into sea, when it was approached by the Navy.During a further search of the vessel, the Navy managed to recover about 250g of heroin and a satellite phone.Accordingly, the Navy nabbed 09 foreign suspects aboard in connection to this racket.

Man jumped barrier fence before being attacked by tiger at Florida zoo, FWC report shows

NAPLES, Fla. - A tiger at the Naples Zoo was killed and an employee of the zoo's cleaning company nearly lost his arm after the man apparently jumped a safety barrier and stuck his arm through the internal fence in the tiger's enclosure, according to a newly released report from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.The tiger attacked, taking hold of the man's arm. He was able to call 911 during the attack and the responding deputy fired one shot, which later resulted in the death of the 8-year-old, male Malayan tiger named Eko.According to a 53-page document released by FWC, the incident happened around 7 p.m., after the zoo closed, on December 29.
